I've been holding onto this nickel for a while now. I can't make up my mind 100%. Is it PMD, or is this some sort of planchette damage before the strike?

I'd say PMD

Looks like the metal was removed on that corner of the coin. If it were missing that area, the reverse would be weaker on that area. Try weighing the coin. It should be under 3.11 grams.

Agreed. I'm going with PMD as well. I would also expect to see other signs of strike weakness, and there is none.

Consider the possibility that it was a strike-through.
That would eliminate the possibility of the planchet being thin at that point and would add enough thickness for a full strike on the reverse.

I assume you had cents on your mind, and you meant 5 grams. It weighs 4.9 grams.
That is a non-conclusive result as the 2 pocket change nickels I used as controls weighed 4.9 and 5 grams.

Yup. Senior moment. It was under the 5 grams, because of the removal of the metal from the coin.
