Haven't had much time to do any coin roll hunting for about a month because I've been crazy busy with research, but picked up $10 in rolls today and found this (along with a nice collection dump of proof pennies from 1999-2008 that totaled about 100). At first I assumed it was struck through gritty grease, but looking more closely, it seems like the texture is more uniform and the edges more abrupt. Possibly struck through a scrap of cloth or paper?

Very interesting. Looks as if something is on the coin's surface, but I know you know the difference and I'm sure in hand it looks different. Cool find!

Thanks Merc! Yeah, can definitely see the depression under a loupe. Sadly, I damaged the camera on my phone slightly, so it doesn't focus very well anymore :/

Hm interesting. Nice find Sam, perhaps struck through cloth maybe? However it doesn't have the ridged texture that normally comes with struck through clothes. You might be right about it being a struck through paper. Not sure, but nevertheless, great find.

I do not think it is struck through cloth. I think it is a struck through, but not sure what else it would be struck through.

Thanks guys! Definitely a curious one. Suspect it will have to simply go in the collection as an unspecified strike through, but cool nonetheless.

P.S. Go vote, everyone!

It could be a ragged piece of paper. Note the die flow lines from the planchet that were there before the strike, still shows them unaltered. I would think it would be a keeper. First time I've seen this.
