I found a 1998 D penny which I believe has a plating error. Thought it might be damaged at first but after looking at it under a microscope I think it is a plating error. Any thoughts?

Split plating issue. This is a post mint problem that happens on zinc core cents. no mint error.

Please always post full photos of the whole coin, both sides, in future postings.

to CCF. Looks like a plating issue to me. It does have split copper plating, but also showing zinc on the bust. Some people say it is PMD from using a cigarette lighter on it. I am kinda on the fence about that theory.
