I attended a coin show in Knoxville today. Among the pieces I acquired was an 1842-O quarter. Looking at the reverse, I noted that the "O" mint mark appears far left of center. This appears to be a large date, what with the pointed "1". From what I surmise, looking online at others of this date, the displaced mint mark doesn't seem to constitute a variety. it?

This looks like the correct MM position for the Large Date.

Below are three random, close-up, reverse MM pics of 1842-O quarters that are currently on ebay. Note how the tip of the eagle feather above the MM extends beyond the "O". Also, note the MM's position relative to the below "R" in quarter. On my coin, the "O" is clearly further left of center. Furthermore, the "O" on my coin appears smaller in comparison to these other examples.

This is not my area, but wasn't all mint marks hand punched on each working die? The placement will vary but still be within tolerance.

As already stated MM were hand punched back then. Could not be the same for each die.

It's a different die pair. Here's one from Heritage with the same MM position as yours.

@Zurie .... Thanks! This answers my question. This "variety" has been designated as Briggs 4-F, a distinct die pair.

I used to collect this series avidly (long time ago), but seem to recall that the MM's on all Large Dates were well to the left of the centered Small Date MM.

I would never be able to remember that much detail! Here's a page from the Briggs reference on this date:

@CoinFrog ... I was never an avid collector of these, but the far left MM seemed unusual to my limited experience with these. I was unable to spot another "4-F" while browsing online. All were centered or to the right a bit.

@Zurie .... Briggs nailed it. Anyone interested in Seated coins should get his books, methinks. Thanks, again!

Back then all MM's were hand punched into the die.

Normal variety of MM position.
