Just wondering how rare it is for a bullion coin to be struck slightly off-center. I just bought the Silver Maple Leaf pictured below, and if you look closely at 7-8 o'clock the rim is significantly narrower than 1-2 o'clock. On a side note, the Royal Canadian Mint in their wisdom publishes no info on this coin, or even a picture, so I dont know if this is officially a proof coin or just proof like. The fields have a satin finish while the relief is lustrous and reflective. pic fixed -GO

By the way...how does one post a pic so that it shows up on the page without having to click a link?

hm... it's not that off-center. Actually, sorry but I don't even think that would be off-center. As long as the rim's there, I don't think it's off-centered. Also, to post the pic, do [imgk]URL.jpg[/imgk], but remove the k. I'm sure jbuck could explain it better. So, here's yours:

Thanks for the edit info!
I'll bet if I measured the rim with scientific calipers there would be a difference in width...I'm somewhat horrified!
I also notice tiny patches of textural differences in the fields. Look at the area around the word FINE...just below the FI?

off center coins need not be measured it can be seen right away. Most coins are really not that perfect so there is a slight difference on the edges if you will measure it religiously.

The difference your seeing is a product of die alignment not of being struck offcenter . having said that there is a normal tolerance which is acceptable and your coin falls well within the normal ranges for die alignment . a coin that is struck out of collar off center is affected on both obverse and reverse. Here are a couple of pictures which show a normal and an off center coin .

Here's a decent picture of the gold version of the coin as comparison...

I see the differences on your ML, but it looks to me more of a strike consistency issue than an actual error. That's a nice design, and for collector bullion I'd expect a l ittle better tolerances.

I bought another one which definitely does NOT have the rim width imbalance so I'm sure the one I posted is a mistake. I will never sell it for any numismatic value. Its worth the spot price of silver and thats it. Yes it is a great design, hopefully destined to become a classic. The reigning champ for bullion coins is the Australian Kookaburra. It carries a higher premium on ebay than any other bullion.
