This is also an attempt at learning to take a decent picture. Is the pic good enough for grading?

Grade away.

I'd say the pic is excellent,

On the grade I would give it a F-15, I don't think it will make EF,
to much wear on the wheat heads.

I don't think this coin would grade higher than F-12, too much all around wear.

I would pay F12 money for this coin. I suspect the strike is weak on the obverse. Hair details well rounded so much while the ear is fairly well defined. The pics are nice. nlp

nlp_coins: why do you suspect a weak strike on the reverse? The coin clearly has non-trivial wear. Despite minor detail surviving on the obverse, I think at this grade it is difficult to distinguish wear from weakness of strike, no? I am interested in learning how to better detect weak strikes on coins with wear so any tips you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments.

I don't know how to see a weak strike...hoping that it will click as a compare more coins to each other.

That pic did turn out okay, with my Canon A85 (4 mp) camera. Had to put the camera within 5 inches of the coin to get details. Getting a good pic of a coin in a 2x2 was a total failure because of glare...that will be another thread at another time. :)

This coin is a VF-30. I have coins graded at F-15 that look way worse then this.

Zeeple, After looking at the sample again maybe I am mistaken about strike. But something is not right with the balance of details. The eye nose and mouth have crisp details and the hair has relatively none as if the coin was in a VG state of wear. Possibly the die was reworked or grease filled. nlp

There's clear separation between the cheek and the jaw. About 60-70% of the wheatlines are showing, some fairly full on the right wheat head. The color is nice and even and the rims look nice.

The 1920P really had no die issues that I'm aware of. They are generally sharp and well-stuck. However, this looks like a LDS coin because the some of the detail in the hair (top of head) is not sharp. The grains in the right wheat head do not have wear that is consistent with the tip or the left wheat grains. Also, the motto's appear slightly dull and enlarged.

VF-25 but I wouldn't slide it to 30 based on the LDS, not quite worthy IMO.

EDIT - LDS = Late Die State
