Hello all you folks. Got something else I haven't been able to find if you don't mind helping. On the attached 1999-D Lincoln Penny OBV & REV images, there are a tremendous amount of what look like wire brush marks....do you folks have any idea what causes that....is it Mint unique of anything like that?

Thank you for your help, as always.

They are probably from rolling lines on the planchet. When struck through, they can flatten, other times they just don't go away:

You can see them on the unstruck area, and weaker on the struck area.

Thank you very much for replying. I wasn't aware that they would use planchets in that condition. Nor, was I aware of that similarity, probably why I couldn't find it with the searches I was using. So, does this characterize it as something I should keep to the side as a unique happening at the mint? Would it be something typically pulled out at the Mint either before or after striking, or they just let it go?...learning more. Thank you again.

The lighting on your image makes it worse than it really is. When taking images at a low angle, creates shadows. With an image right over head, the coin will still show a rough texture, but the shadows will go away.

Coop, I'm getting the best I can at the moment with this setup. I'll keep trying to work with the lighting situation. However that said, it appears to me that the planchet striations are easy to see in many areas regardless of the top of coin shadowing (good feedback on that). With the light turned up, it is actually more difficult to see them, as the coin reflects straight into the camera. That said, what do you think it is with the striations being consistent through all items OBV and REV? I have read that it is indicative of Planchet striations, as they do not disappear upon die strike, vs a poor die where they may easily disappear. Always appreciate feedback as I continue to learn. Good for more analysis, keep it as unique, etc...?
