Do you folks get a lot of use out of Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US Coins?

It generally goes for $150 and up on ebay, and I was wondering if the book has become merely a collector's item itself, or if the information is really worth it at that sort of price.

Thanks (again)...

Hi Steve. The original list price in 1988 was $75. Street price was about $60. If a collector is eclectic and collect many different types of coins up to then, it is an important reference book. The photos were very good for the time, even though B/W. If someone collects strictly modern, it might not rank high. Yes it has become a collectible, especially since his death. I have seen them much higher than $150, which is a very nice price. it is doubtful it will be reprinted as it was by Doubleday, and demand is low.

Check and see if one is at a local library or coin club that could be used when necessary, so a purchase could be postponed.

I don't use mine a lot, mainly because of his constant attempts to get the numismatic world to use his numbers instead of Sheldon, Overton, Cohen, etc. But the information contained therein is pretty good. There are much better references for practically all coin series.

The Bteen book is full of information but how much of it any one person will actually use is a different story.

I rarely use it at work actually unless it's a real obscure variety. I utilize Cherrypicker's and Overton a lot more on a regular basis.

As pointed out earlier there are more comprehensive books on invdividual types of coins.

Breen's knowledge was truly vast but how much of it one will ever use is a different story.

everything that Clembo said.

But, I still use mine every once in a while.

Interesting reading, just don't take everything as gospel truth.
Breen made up some of his 'facts.'

I got mine for free

I found one new and still in the box at a store that was going out of business. I paid $40 for it then traded it to the guy at my local coin shop for his used copy plus my $40 back.

I've thumbed through it but never read it. I use my Cherry-pickers guide a lot because it's easier to use with the spiral binding.
