Until I started reading this forum, I had no interest in error and variety hunting, but that might, might be slowly changing. I had a thought and a corresponding opportunity that I wanted to run by the experts. It appears that us newbies struggle mightily if searching random coins for anything "different". It also occurred to me that when I teach people how to hunt edible mushrooms, that random approach is absolutely opposite to what beginners ought to do. Searching at random times, in random places, and attempting to ID everything that is encountered is incredibly discouraging and has a low success rate. A more productive approach is to look in the most likely places, at the right time, for a few easily identified fungi which you have studied and calibrated your eyeballs to spot. As you build knowledge, then you can broaden your search and pick up incidental treats. That works for mushrooms, so I was wondering if that might apply to coins? It seems that while phenomena are shared, certain ones are more common or characteristic of certain dates and mints, and it looks to me like the experts on here draw on that knowledge.

If that is making sense, then this is where I might have an opportunity. An acquaintance of mine has about $200 face value in LWC's that his grandfather sorted by date and mint mark. After talking to a coin dealer, my friend probably won't get much out of them as they are anything but "unsearched". If you feel a targeted search would be beneficial for a rank beginner, which dates and mints should I seek to acquire, and why? Just as with fungus, what are the most productive coins to look for things that a beginner like me could identify without excessive , as some folks seem to experience?

And while I am a hoarder, 20,000 wheat cents under my bed is even beyond my tolerances! Not buying them all!

If they haven't been searched, they might be a chance to get something very nice. If they are searched already by dates, then the best way is to look at the sites for that year and see what Varieties are known. Then start of the search after checking all three sites. Sometimes finding the right coin, would pay for all the whole batch. So try one year. 1941 plain. Then see what you see on the three sites and go from there.

If you find something in this batch like these, then it would be worth the effort to buy the whole lot.
That is where I would start. If you find stuff, then it wasn't pre-searched. Then try another year/mint for DDO / DDR and RPMs.

Thank you, coop! Needed a starting point.

I might try to make an offer on the 1941's, then.

My understanding is that these were accumulated and sorted roughly thirty years ago.

So, it might be worthwhile to buy the whole lot? Anyone with an idea of a fair price if an initial sampling is positive? Two or three times face is what the dealer said he would offer on the lot as wholesale for searched LWC's. I would expect to pay more, if picking and choosing dates.

20,000 cents. I guess when my house fills up, I will live out of my tent!

You've certainly got the right idea, and a way forward to pursue it. A couple dates you might go after, and for circulated rolls pretty much pay $2 each. None of these dates are rare.

1941-P (as Coop mentioned). Lots of DDOs and DDRs with some very good ones.

1956-D Mostly looking for RPMs but several doubled eyelids and DDRs.

1946-S These can take a while to go through as lots going on including many RPMs with an inverted S and D/S along with several doubled dies.

1944-D Good RPMs and doubled dies are fairly common.

1936-P There's more to find on these than the well-known dies 1 and 2, but you'd be surprised at how many of even those are still in rolls.

But do the studying first. Know what could happen those years will help you when you get to another year. Keep in mind that the same events can happen on different years. So Don't limit your searches for just the selected searches. I studied over the 1994 DDR's and considered, "If this happened this year, maybe other years could have the same thing. So using that information I found the first 2002-D DDR with similar doubling:

Wexler's list:

Quote:

2002-D 1¢ WDDR-002 "Best Of" Variety
Description: A nice spread to the west shows on the left side of EPU and the left dots.
Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge can be found south of the first 2 in the date. Reverse: A die gouge can be found to the left of the lower U in UNITED. A die gouge can be found to the left of the lower L in PLURIBUS. A die gouge can be found above the upper left dot. Die pitting can be found above the end of the left Memorial base. A die gouge can be found in the upper first bay.

So don't limit yourself to just a certain year for a certain type of doubling.
