Hi can this possibly be a Mint Error Copper Nickel? It's a 1983-D
Jefferson nickel. The clad is also copper. Thanks for any info.

If a nickel gets buried in the ground, it eventually turns dark brown. To me this has the appearance of a metal detector find that has been put back into circulation.

Nickels are 75% copper, 25% nickel. I feel this is a metal detector find. Slowing in circulation the high points will turn gray, just like it is doing now. If it were struck on a cent, then would have been struck on a Zincoln, not a copper planchet. On a struck through a cent, the devices would hang over the edge of the coin:

Your coins weight and diameter looks normal. Just an outdoor find.

Environmental toning/tarnishing, most likely from being buried in soil at some point in it's life. Appearance improvement unlikely and/or not worth the effort. Value: 5 cents.

to the CCF! Keep searching!
