Hi all :)

Recently acquired a SA 5s 1892 Single Shaft from a fellow collector.

Nothing about this coins screams fake to me, however I know that these coins are highly faked and often in quite convincing detail.

Anyone have any idea of what to look out for on these or have opinions over whether they think mine may be fake?

1. The weight is 27.64g, less than the required 28.28g but probably correct and commensurate with the degree of wear on the coin.
2. The diameter is 38.5mm spot on.
3. The thickness is just over 2mm. I note that this is supposed to be 3.3mm on numista.
4. Specific gravity test is fine.
5. Magnet slide test results and 'ping' test the same as my other .925 crowns (UK).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If the weight, density, and diameter are correct I don't see how the thickness is off by that much.

I looked at UK crowns from that era and none of the Krause or Numista entries I checked have an identified thickness. If you have one you could measure it. That should be close to your coin as the specs are the same or almost the same depending on the particular coin.

Hi thanks for the reply and your thoughts. Good idea- having just measured a few old crowns (1819, 1821 and various Victoria ones) they are around 2.3-2.4mm which is the same as the SA one. Are there any obvious indications that mine might be fake? There's nothing jumping out at me but I'm a cautious person.

Can you please crop your photos to show us more coin and less background?

This is a common assumption that is not true. The apparent amount of wear would not account for that much weight loss.

SG can be difficult to determine accurately with the kind of scale pictured. What, exactly, was the SG that you determined?
