@psd, I understand that both nickels are the same date and mint and you have the same question about both of them, but in general best practice is to only post one coin per thread. Not a big deal, but it does help us with the search functionality.

Have you looked on the varietyvista site for '64 D RPM's yet? With these pics, but mintmarks look like they have taken circulation damage to me, but having the coins in hand might give you better insight.

On a RPM, there need to be spread between the punches of the die. I see none of this on your coin. Just incuse marks from coin contact. As already mentioned, take a look at the listed RPMs for this year and note how the mintmarks are enlarged, and showing spread on them:

Note that even the smaller RPMs, show a rise from the fields, others showing spread between the punching. MD and coin damage is often just an incuse mark on the device. Not a spread, but an incuse area that many look at. Look for the spreads on RPM and doubled dies, not the reductions on the outside edges of devices. Look for the spread.

Thanks very much to you both, I will do what you suggest. I apologize for posting both coins, I thought that because I had the same question for both it would be okay. I have 51 of these 64 D coins—there's so much to know about this stuff! I truly appreciate your knowledge, it's most helpful. :)
