Yes, they were all BU LMC 1980 rolls. Makes you wonder how they ended up there. If I do decide to sell any, I will definitely let you know. As a kid I saved quite a few OBW rolls from the 70s and early 80s. Funny to think I haven't done this for 20 years and found some of the same rolls I used to save!

I just thought about the aluminum penny the mint was experimenting with that year, and someone could have thought to save all the 1974 cents they came across. Noticed that a couple of these had very defined steps.

Thanks everyone. I need to figure how to post photos and upload a few shots. My best find in about $100 worth of rolls is a 2000 WAM in XF. You guys seem to be finding lots more of these WAMs than I do.

I finally broke down and picked up a penny dansco (1909-present). I've been separating copper pennies from zinc that I get in change for a while now but I've never bothered to go through what I had. I also have a pretty decent wheat collection that was in cheapo whitman folders. I transferred my wheaties into the dansco and then sat down and started going through my penny pile to fill up the memorial slots. After burning through those I picked up a box at the bank and searched through those. Now most of my modern holes are filled with bu coins except for the proof slots. I went to cash in all of the pennies that I didn't want along with some other change and I ended up with $24.99 so I couldn't get another box.

Now before I get serious about penny searching I have a few questions. First of all, are rolls of BU 80s and 90s pennies worth selling? I've been keeping the really nice bu zincs that I find but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. I'm also separating the bu coppers from the circulated. There are still a few older memorial pennies in my book that could be upgraded so I'll keep looking out for those. As for the wams and cams are those worth collecting? I don't even see them for sale on ebay so is it just something that people hope will be worth something someday? Do grading services even acknowledge those varieties? Is there anything else that I should look out for or be aware of?

I would encourage you to continue to keep the bu zinc coins assuming they grade at least ms 63 red. The zinc coins do not hold up well in circulation so bu red coins will gradually corrode away.

Yes I know they made them by the billions but even so I figure any bu coin is worth a couple pennies per piece. This is true of most rolls sold online and at coin shops and shows. I personally feel many of these bu zinc and copper coins we are finding right now are only available because of the very bad economy. People are turning in their pocket change that has been sitting around for 10 - 30 years in their change jars. This trend will not last forever. Sooner or later most change jars will have been turned into the local bank or coinstar machine and thus this treasure trove of copper and bu zinc pennies we find in rolls will significantly decline in the near future. 925dealer is dead on. You can't go wrong putting away high grade coins right now. We have an opportunity to save a lot of coins that are going to circulation. Like Thad, I am trying to put a BU roll of every date and MM away. Believe it or not, I have been able to finish a few in the 60s and 70s over the last few yrs.

I wasn't saving BU coins until I read this whole thread. You kept showing pics of BU coins that you had found which peaked my interest. I started saving them and it is a lot fun. Now I look for wheats, coppers, varieties, and BU coins! The more the merrier.
