If its cents I'm after, I just say I'd like a box of pennies please. Usually no problem unless they don't have a box. Then I settle for whatever rolls they have on hand. When going to a non account bank for halves however, I usually open with, "Hi! I don't have an account but I'd like to buy some halves please". They ask how many and we go from there. Once in a while I may get a little resistance, but not much & not very often. I find most tellers very nice and glad to help. I always say "I'd like to get some pennies." They ask "How many?" I respond "I would like a box but if you can't do that then just $10 worth." Rarely do I walk out empty handed.
