Great find Scott. I would definitely run it thru the actone for a couple of min just to kill anything organic.

Excellent find!
i wonder if Toluene works better than Xylene, no way id ever wana try but what would the most effective solvent be?

3 terrible boxes yesterday. 26 total wheat pennies. 2 from the 20s both bad shape. others common date 12s pennies 152CAD pennies. 1 king george 25-35 2009 pennies. some in terrible terrible shape. $20 in copper tho. i have alot of 92,95,98,99,00 to look for CAM and WAM. got about 200 1982s I keep them all. I cant tell which ones or copper / zink. small large.. so I just keep them all and when I acually care to figure it out ill go thru them. I have about $10 in 1982 pennies so hopefully I have all the combos. |

I hate going through all the '82's. Whenever I have a roll I force myself to go through the steps. It does get faster each time but man, what a pain.

They are essentially the same except xylene has an extra methyl group. However, I greatly prefer to work with xylene because it's not nearly "annoying" from a chemical standpoint. Toluene just reeks to me! |

Determining copper versus zinc is easy. Copper pennies weigh 3.1 grams (sometimes 3 grams) and zinc weigh 2.5 grams (sometimes 2.4). After you seperate them it is easy to determine large and small mint marks. Sincerely, John Leckrone

most of the 82's you find are copper so thats a good thing. The difference between small and large is night and day once you have seen them both several times.

I picked up $15 in pennies on a business trip this week and only pulled 4 wheats, but I did pull 45 2009s.

Just picked up a box of pennies (with a box of dimes too) tonight at my local TCF bank. I have searched about 1/3 of the box and have already found 7 wheats, 3 canadians, and 1 2006 Bahamas penny.
The Bahamas penny sounds like its the same copper plated zinc composition as our pennies. I wonder if they're struck at the US Mint?.
As for the 7 wheats I have found, they are 40's & 50's with the exception of one that is a 1925-D. Its the first time I have found a pre-1940 non-Philly wheat from circulation. I can't wait to see what the rest of the box will bring.

So against better judgment I picked up another box of cents hoping my recent roll hunting slump was over. It's not. another dismal box of cents. 448 coppers, plus only 5 wheats. 1 smashed dime, so I guess I came out ahead by 9 cents on the purchase of this box. 3 canadian cents; '76, 83, 2007. and one counterstamped '76 cent with small state of CA outline with "CA" inside, and one 2 Euro cent piece. Perhaps i'll stop roll hunting for a few weeks, or try a different bank in a different city...not that that would actually make difference.
