I just thought I'd toss out this one to the group here.
I saw an 1858 Seated Liberty half dime today that spec'ed out to roughly 15.5mm diameter--but with what appeared to be a plain edge. To me, the edge looked original, without any signs of abrasion, spooning or out of round and same patina as the rest of the coin. The coin looked about VG10-F12 (not an expert here), but the denticles look very mushy, like a worn/damaged die. Perhaps the coin was pressed into a holder at some time, but would that remove all signs of reeding?

I know...we want pics, lol--but before I go through all the trouble, is it anything worth a closer look, or just an altered coin? The denticles and rim struck me as very odd, and I thought it was a contemporary counterfeit--how would the coin be missing the reeding otherwise? Any better ideas than mine? It did not look broadstruck.

I had that coming...perhaps I can get the dealer to loan it for a shot? He's loaned me coins before.
