Hello, is this a D/D or RPM comparing the condition of the date with that of the mint mark? By 2004 the mints were already using the single squeeze method. Your comments please. Thanks
junjie

junjie, in 1990 the mint stopped adding the mintmarks by hand to the dies. This eliminates any chance of a RPM from that year forward. What you have here is severe Die Deterioration. Another thing that might help you determine this is the date digits. Notice how the zero is wider but has beveled edges down to the field and the crossbar of the four spreads in all four directions. These are all signs of die wear.

I agree with you Mike that MM are no longer added by hands. But if all the designs come from one single die and made of the same material why would the date deteriorate faster than the MM. I think there are a lot of polishing lines that affects the lower D but no signs of polish line on the top D. Here are photos that shows the disparity in the condition of the date and MM.

MorgansRmine is 110% correct. It is severe Die Deterioration, nothing more.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Bill & Mike. I fully agree with you both that there is a very severe Die Deterioration. I am a bit confused on the aspect of the condition of the MM versus the condition of the date. Is it possible that the MM is in much better condition than the date when both were pressed on the same date using the same materials? Why is the deterioration of the date more severe than that of the MM? Thanks
junjie

The date is a bit more exposed and will experience more wear then the date. Notice how the south end of the "D" is wearing.

Hi rockdude. Considering the proximity betweem the date and MM that is very unlikely. Here's another photo of the coin. Notice how the D stands out viz-a-viz the other devices. Thanks
