hmm... Madero's eyes seem different from the few I have. Might be another variety.
I will post pics of mine later

Quote: I'm just wondering if this is really a doubled die. Most definitely--and I don't think I need to stick arrows on this one--nice find! See where the serifs are clearly separated? As to the "open 8", I cannot tell by the pic, but my bets are on post-mint damage where the digit was pushed around? But since those dates use different digit styles, perhaps there was a really odd punch? (but I don't know these coins)Then again, the "closed 8" date is odd too because it's rather crude. Do the portraits between each coin look different as well?

thanks KurtS. really helps to have someone confirm. the font is completely different on the dates. there is a line under the 1's in the closed 8's. I found this DDR on accident I was looking at the dates. here are the obverse pics, they do look different.

How interesting! Despite some wear on the bottom coin, it's obvious the portrait is completely different--look at the moustache. I wonder why the mint would use two starkly different portraits in the same year? I'll ask a friend who lived in Mexico take a look.

hmmm.... I was about to call the closed 8 a counterfeit, but I does have the serif as mine. The details of the 1981 opened 8 are certainly there. I think you have a true variety here! ..I'm looking on ebay, and the 1981s all have a serif on the 1 and a closed 8. So... I'm still thinking whether or not the closed 8 you have is a counterfeit. Anyways, I'm sure the open 8 is a variety! Better get it authenticated! Here's mine ... hmm... hotlinking image isn't working...

The coin with the open "8" seems to be more consistent with contemporary coinage, wd1040's examples from the '70's look to be the same as that one. I don't have any 20 centavos from the '80's and I am not too sure as to why someone would make a counterfeit of such a low denomination, with the inflation at the time! What I do have is Madero on a 500 peso from '87 and it would be consistent with the open "8" version. Which one has the doubling, or is it on both?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Econom...and_recoveryWell, from what I'm reading on Wiki, it seems that 1982 was the start of the problem, and from my coins, it isn't until 1985 that inflation really kicked in and Mexico had to issue a new series of coins all denominated in pesos and didn't issue centavo coins. So I think that the 20c was probably one of the last (if counterfeit) centavo coins during that time...

How interesting...if the metal on the "open 8" isn't moved around, that was sure a weird die or punch for the date. I really have no knowledge of Mexican coins and how these dies were made / dated. Perhaps a friend who is more familiar will chime in?

Wow, that's really interesting! On this one page, there are 4 different portraits of Madero, spanning just 6 years. It's almost like 4 different engravers hand-made hubs/dies from a single photograph. If I were to vote, it would be for version #1.

I just went thru a roll of the 74- 82, and the ones I have all have the "8" closed, and normal looking. I remember seeing the "open 8" while down there, but didn't payany attention to it. I was too busy getting up before dawn to get milk for the store, and then hit the rest of the wholesalers for the rest of the needs for the day We didn't have it like up here, where everythimng is delivered, and stocked by the salespeople. I did all that! Up here, you go and buy a dozen eggs, there I bought by the caase 36 dozen. The soda venders were the only ones who stocked the walk-in, and mnachines. When they were gone, I had to keep new soada in ht e refrigerators. lots of fun, and a LOT of work! The only thing that I had to pay close attention to was the prices for the basic foods. The Secretasry of Finance gave out the perices, daily, and their inspectors were on the road daily, checking. I have had them ask me,"how can you sell at those prices, and make any money? I told them, I don't "live off the store" So no problem". Dick
