Looking at my collection for RPM's I found this interesting issue. I thought it was damage at first then I started looking at the way the foreign substance reaches behind the front lapel of Lincoln's coat. Also goes behind the D. this substance also exists on the back of Lincoln's coat. The reverse has some strange letters at the bottom. I am working on getting a better microscope and I am sorry for the bad pictures.
Any ideas what this could be? I image its just damage or Machine Doubling as all my finds seem to be LOL>
Thank you in advance

The MM area looks like a nose LAM to me but I'll let the pros weigh in. As for the 'letters?' On the reverse, I am clueless.

to CCF. Not a LAM IMHO. Something is "on" the coin. Not seeing the "letters" To me it would be a spender.

wheat pennies from the World War II era like this one ... that are made from spent copper shell cases used for ammunition. Yep, recycled copper! I am wondering if this is part of a shiny spent shell on the planchet ? Because it is infused with the coin and not a spender.

Years ago the current trend then was to put varnish on a BU coin to keep it look. That maybe one that was spend the affected areas may have been protecting those areas for a long time in circulation. That maybe what we are seeing on this one.

John1 and coop are right, not a lam, just something on it's surface, probably varnish as coop suggested. Wheaties wholesale for about 3 cents each, so there you go! Throw it into a pile of Wheaties until you get enough for a roll, then sell it for $1.50.

p.s. - Your title said it was a 1964 Wheat cent, but since there is no such animal, it's obviously a typo. Just fyi.

LOL oops I did have another dyslexic moment. Thanks - I wonder if I can edit my topic name.
I thought the same thing but the way it goes behind the jacket it had me confused.
Thanks for the help.
