The Royal Mint - We sent the David Bowie commemorative coin into space to celebrate the intergalactic legacy of David Bowie and his hits including Starman, Life on Mars and Space Oddity. The coin reached 35,656m and orbited the Earth's atmosphere for 45 minutes before safely descending back to Britain.

Very nice, would love to buy those to go with the stamp set issued in 2017

Much cheaper than the coins (£15 or so) but sold out in Nanoseconds.

I liked Bowie a great deal back in the 70s and bought his album "Aladdin Sane", although I never really thought much of his later output. And he was quite a cool dude and a good sport as evidenced by his appearance as a guest star on Bing Crosby's last Christmas Special in 1977, when they sang the duet "Little Drummer Boy".

But... I don't like the way The Royal Mint is going with its output of £5 coins. The Royal Mail has practically killed stamp collecting in Britain with its excessive output of high-face-value stamp sets, each designed to appeal to a particular interest, and The Royal Mint seems to be following them. I drew the line in 2017 - I am not buying any more £5 coins, unless (a) they are included in the annual BU set, which I get every year or (b) they are made available in banks and post offices at face value, as all £5 coins were until 2008. My only exception to the rule is the Queen's Beasts, but only because I want to complete the set!

Completely agree @NumisRob, in fact I've totally stopped buying from The Royal Mint altogether - mint sets, £5 coins, literally anything at all. I'm not buying it on principle since I disagree with their recent practices. I've instead decided to use my money into pursuing other things in collecting, for which I can get much nearer to a complete set and don't have to shell out ludicrous amounts for effective tokens - for instance I'm currently collaborating with a friend in the Isle Of Man to try and get a complete set of all circulating coins there. Way more fun to actually find things than buy them (and the designs are generally FAR nicer)!

Totally agree, my British collection stops at 2007 (Right before Harry Potter, when I thought they had gone too far).

I bought the Bowie stuff, because it was on sale here in NZ through our NZ Post website and that I am a HUUUGGGGEEEE fan of Bowie (He is up there with Prince, as you can understand 2016 was a HORRIBLE year for me, also with the death of George Michael).

I know its wallpaper stamps, but it was nicely designed.

Rather than get angry at Royal Mint for the Bowie and Elton coins, how about looking at their rip off selection of historic coins, some of these prices will shock you.

Victorian pennies (Old head) worn Good one for £8 each

Set with EF 1967 Florin and Shilling and 1968 10p and 5p -£40 (Yes that much for 4 coins worth under a pound and they are only EF, not Uncirculated where they are common as dirt!)

A mint set of 5 Colonial Half sovereigns (£3000 or £650 per coin)

A VG William IV halfcrown designed as Fine plus - £160

Worn 1920 - 1946 6d - £12 each in card.

And many more ripoffs and this is The Royal Mint not some gouging company like Westminster or Prestige!

It's outrageous, @Princetane - you're completely right. Unfortunately, profit has gotten really into their heads and the sad reality is that, inasmuch as we can obviously see that a worn Victorian bun head penny for £8 is a complete rip off, there will be people who'll buy them thinking they're getting a great deal because "it's well over a century old!"

Similarly, the sets with the 1967 coins and all the other examples - shove some fancy case around them and suckers will pay for it.

It's like the scam emails that go around - yes, most people know that they're scams and they'll get put in the spam folder, but enough people will buy into them such that it's very profitable for the creators of them. All you need is enough uneducated people to buy them - the fact that anyone with any degree of numismatic intellect will steer well away is irrelevant to them.
