A few might find this fascinating:

Deep sea treasure hunter Tommy Thompson has now been locked up for about 5 years, uncuring $1.8 million in fines ($1000 per day for over 1700 days) for his unwillingness or inability to disclose the location of 500 gold coins he pulled from the SS America off South Carolina. He took over $12m from 161 investors who have received no proceeds from his haul. At one point from 2012-2015 was on the run after failing to appear at a hearing. His lawyers claim a medical condition has shot his short term memory and he doesn't know where the gold coins are, but the courts aren't buying it and he's sat in jail on contempt of court charges now since his re-capture in 2015.

"He creates a patent for a submarine, but he can't remember where he put the loot," federal Judge Algenon Marbley said during a 2017 hearing.

Interesting. Funny how your memory can remember everything but the important stuff.

So the excuse for 500 gold coins going missing, 161 shorted investors on $12M, skipping court and avoiding the authorities for 3 years is, "My short term memory is bad". Our wives would never let that fly... and it's his legal defense
