It's copper corrosion from exposure. (US Nickels are 75% Cu).

It was likely buried and found with a metal detector.

I have a section on discolored coins in my November Roll searchers newsletter.

Use the askaboutcoins link in my signature. I particularly show a quarter that I dug up to make the point:-)
