Hi all, and hope you and your families are safe and healthy this holiday season. I had a quick question to the US Large Cent experts out there. I metal detect for a hobby here in Vermont and have found many large cents over the years (54 this year etc.). Many, as you imagine are quite corroded but some are still in really good shape despite all those years in the ground, and I've posted about a few on this forum. I'm just now getting around to the attempt to identify the varieties of these better examples. So my question. What are your suggestions for the best US Large Cent books out there that help in identifying varieties. I've heard of Penny Whimsy for the early LCs, John Wright's Cent Book for the mid-dates, and have also heard of Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins. Are these still the standard, or are there better books out there? Much thanks in advance for your advice.

John

There's always the 6-volume set by William C. Noyes: "United States Large Cents". This appears to be from 2006, and I don't know how available is is anymore.

edit: it is still available, but pricey:

If you can't buy the books:

Dan Holmes' Sheldon # Large Cent collection:
http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...&sale=54&lan

His Newcomb # Middle Date collection:
http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...le=59&lang=1

For Late Dates you will have to buy a book (I did find a nice XF 1848 N30 using just Newcomb's original reference). You may be able to use Ted's Late Date Large Cent collection, which was sold along with Dan's Early Dates-you can see it below Dan's Sheldons

Early dates either Penny Whimsy or Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793 - 1814. Penny Whimsy will be easier to find, but I would say to avoid the 1990 edition, especially the first printing. Breen has better pictures but four of the varieties are not pictured, they repeated the image of another variety in error.

Middle dates either John Wright's The Cent Book, or Bill Noyes United States Large Cents 1816 - 1839 The Cent Book will be much easier to acquire as it is still available from the author. The Noyes book is out of print and difficult to find. If it is available, the distributor is Charlie Davis.

Late Dates the book you want is U. S. Cents 1840 - 1857 by Robert Grellman. The third edition is out of print and no longer available from the author. The fourth edition is available in the EACS website in the members section as a digital edition. Bob does say in the latest issue of Penny Wise that the printed version should be ready by the end of the year, bu tno price has been established yet. When it is available it can be ordered from the author.

As Whatdowehavehere said the Dan Holmes collection listing that he posted are also very useful in connection with the books. Dan's early and middle date collections show EVERY variety with the exception of 1825 N-5, and N-5 is the obv of N-4 paired with the rev of N-10 so both dies ARE pictured in the collection, just not together. If the diagnostics of each variety had been listed in the catalogs they would have been the ultimate books on the large cents.

There is a brand new book just out designed specifically for what you are asking, again as typical on most EAC books it ain't cheap @ $125.00

U.S. Large Cents 1793-1814 Variety Identification Guide, by Robert Powers

https://www.coinbooks.org/v23/club_...tml#article2

I have the earlier edition and it's a really well done book. Great photos and lots of pointers in identifying the various varieties.

As others have said Noyes, it's probably the best but price at almost $700 for the complete set. Breen's encyclopedia on US Large Cents, is out of print but also a good one to look for. I think the Goldman Dan Holmes 4 catalogs and the Husak catalog (Heritage Sale #460 Long Beach Feb. 2008).

For earlier colonial look no farther than Q. David Bowers' new 2nd Edition of Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins, it just came out a couple of months ago.
