So this is all jBucks fault as he bullied me into doing a 7070 type set. But because the 7070 album isn't available, I decided to do a slabbed type set. And to keep track I'm going to use the NGC registery at least until I get annoyed with NGC and start slabbing my own coins, but for now I'm only going with NGC and PCGS coins. For the lower cost coins I'm going to try and get proofs because why not This is my current set: https://www.NGCcoin.com/registry/co...sets/305404/And I have more coming but my question is: 1) Which coins are the show stoppers (cost?) 2) Which coins are stupid $$$$ in MS? 3) Which coins are the hardest too find? I'm assuming the answers for all 3 is the same but I want to be prepared. So please let me know And jBuck STOP BULLYING ME!

Quote: I'm only going with NGC and PCGS coins The smart way, ANACS and ICG are, and I hate to say it, not reliable enough. Quote: Which coins are the show stoppers (cost?) This depends on the grades you're looking for. This is such a hard question to answer broadly. Quote: Which coins are stupid $$$$ in MS? FEC, 1859 Indians (with good surfaces), 1866 Shield (with good strike), 20c, Seated 25c (in MS-63 or higher), Seated halves (depending on a lot of factors), Barber halves, Seated dollars, Trade dollars. Quote: Which coins are the hardest too find? Again, pretty broad question. It depends on so many things. What grade? What color for the copper coins? Toned or blast? How many imperfections are permissible? Not to toot my own horn, but I'd like to think I know a thing or two about collecting MS type coins, so keep the questions rolling. If you want me to do a total breakdown, just ask. Edit: I just looked through your set, it's looking good! I quite like the 1961 Proof Quarter, great original toning.

Grape, I'm trying to keep the coins no more than $300 (I may go higher for a few like less than 5). I guess Which coins do I have to go higher than $300 and are there any that get crazy priced quickly? For example a Trade dollar looks its $200 in XF45 but $600 in AU. And while I'm busting JBuck, your type set was my inspiration!

Mine is just an album collection, and certainly most of the coins are far from MS, but here's my experience with a 7070: 1) Show Stoppers: The Seated dollars and the Trade dollar are just unbeatable. For what is essentially a $3k collection of mine, the dollars probably make up about $1k of that. 2) Most Expensive: Capped Bust large cent, 3c Silver, Twenty Cent, Seated dollar3) Hardest to Find: There were 4 spaces that sat empty in my album for a long time and that was the capped large cent, Seated dollar, Seated dollar with motto, and Trade dollar. Finding them at shops or shows here in the northwest was a huge challenge. You were right, the answers really were the same for each. I'm working on a custom type set with draped bust silver, and other key varieties of normal types, that helped change up the answers

Grape Quote: I just looked through your set, it's looking good! I quite like the 1961 Proof Quarter, great original toning That coin was $10. I'm looking locally as the prices are excellent. My LCS actually had a top 50 registry set purchase but since I was doing currency I passed on a lot of coins I could have picked up all the common / recent coins for an excellent price. Like I told jBuck you live and learn!

Okay 1 hour later not done. As snobbish as this may come off to people who don't really know me I don't collect circulated coins personally for the most part, some exceptions, but usually not. That being said, I'm still a dealer and a pretty established type collector. I just want this to be as complete, accurate, and informative as possible. I've actually wanted to one of these for a while, so thanks for giving me an excuse

$300 is my budget for majority of items, I want a nice set and would go higher, but I like to set a budget and work from there. This is a 2021 goal, that along with my IHC set. I have one more note and then I'll work on these. Being honest, I want to try and do this from what I can get locally, I have about 7-8 coin shops (without going into NYC). If a coin is more, I can plan it as a future purchase, so $300 is a budget buts it's flexible,

@MOS0239, I know ebay has everything but this is going to be done without ebay, I'm keeping the local stores active. Did you see my currency type set? I did that without buying anything from ebay, going to try to do this the same.

Can't offer any more input than what has already been given. Mine are going into a Dansco with a minimum grade of VF-30. I've been neglecting it and only probably 2/3 the way done. But I do look forward to seeing updates on this one! I'm sure you'll get hooked as usual and knock it out before new year .

I guess you changed your mind/opinion on slabbed coins.. Nice start, best of luck (seems like you have some good LCSs) looking forward to seeing your progress.... Sidenote: I've been seeing articles about an upcoming meteor shower happening this month...Will you be shooting any pixs of this or are they too close for your field of photography?

Hfjacinto... I did a hybrid slabbed/Dansco 7070. A lot of people probably wouldn't like this but I couldn't for the life of me buy a nice slabbed coin ($300 and up) and crack it out as soon as I received it. My collection directions change from time to time and sometimes I like to upgrade. I stand a better chance of atleast getting my money back if I leave these coins in the slab. I went MS on all the coins I could afford to but I gave in to F or better on the tougher ones and they had to have good eye appeal. There are several you will be able to find in MS for under $300 but there are several your not going to come close to finding in MS condition for $300. I am content and happy with my set. If you want to see it just click the link below. The good thing about 7070's is that they are all different. You have to do what you like and what you can afford. Have fun putting the set together along the way as well. I probably learned more about the history of the United States coinage while putting this set together.

Never could see the use for a type set. I made a 20th Century one a long time ago and never looked at it again.

@MOS0239 The link below is a thread on my currency type set. Nothing was from ebay. Everything was local 30% Allens in Ohio 50% and the rest from Vern Potter/Denly's and a shop in Long Island. It's a long thread almost 35 pages. Basically my collection story. http://goccf.com/t/373956
