Quote: I guess you changed your mind/opinion on slabbed coins.. Nice start, best of luck
Thank you! I haven't changed my mind on slabbed, 90% of all coins shouldn't be slabbed. I've been buying slabbed coins for what a raw costs. Seriously who slabs a $1 Presidential Coin? And don't get me started on slabbing bullion? There are millions of bullion coins why would you slab one. The chance of getting a 70 is about 1 in 3 or 1 in 2.
So slabbed coins are bad for those that slab then but I'll buy them if they cost the same as raw.
Quote: seems like you have some good LCSs
Within 30 minutes I have at least 6 LCS near me. I deal mostly with 2, and since we have a good relationship he puts stuff on the side for me. The reason I picked up a lot of the low cost recent coins because the LCS purchased a large lot in which the collector slabbed everything. I mean proof Lincoln memorial cents? I picked one up for $2. Oh well someone's else loss is my gain

Sidenote: I've been seeing articles about an upcoming meteor shower happening this month...Will you be shooting any pixs of this or are they too close for your field of photography?
Meteor showers occur almost every month, the next is the Geminids (called that because they come from the constellation of Gemini).
I don't do meteor showers because you need dark skies. I image nearby NYC, it's not dark here :(
For meteor showers you need to keep the shutter opened and then stack the images with the skies the light pollution overwhelms the meteors so pictures are never really nice from home. We also need a few clear nights and it's been cloudy so I haven't imaged much :(
You're type set is beautiful! jBucks thread was my inspiration to do this! I decided to do slabbed because of the registry sets. I figure just track it there. But jBuck really bullied me onto completing this set, so it's all his fault
Looking at your set I would be happy with a set like that!
It's been awhile since I finished my 7070 so I am not completely up on current pricing, but based on my experience:
1) Which coins are the show stoppers (cost?)
It will very much depend on grade but the tougher coins in my opinion to get in decent VF or better grades are the 4 Draped Bust and Classic Head 1/2 and 1 Cent coins (especially the cents), the Twenty Cent Piece (lots available but hard to find a really nice one), the Capped Bust Reeded Edge 50 cent piece, and the two Seated dollars.
2) Which coins are stupid $$$$ in MS?
The earlier coppers and the Seated dollars are going to be $1000+ plus coins or close to it in my experience.
3) Which coins are the hardest too find?
I spent a lot of time looking for my 20 cent piece and my reeded edge Capped Bust 50c piece. Hard to find good strikes with nice details and toning.
At a $300 limit, you should be able to get a lot of nice coins. I think you will need to probably expand your budget a bit for the Seated dollars - probably more like $500-600 for a decent VF or maybe XF. The early coppers cents you are looking at F-VF maybe at that price (? - I got my lower grade ones for $25/ea so there is a wide range there). Earlier Capped Bust silvers in XF maybe.
When I did my 7070 I set a target grade and price for each coin and started to try to check them off with nice coins at the right price. Sometimes a good deal would come up and I'd grab it. In general, I did a grade progression in my set - older coins in lower grades, newer coins in higher rather than try to do the same grade for all.
I don't understand how someone can built an entire Dansco 7070 set in Mint State and expect to pay $300 average per coin. Surely, a MS Flowing Hair and Draped Bust will already be $10K+.

I don't understand how some one can critique my budget when I never said I was doing the 7070 in mint state.
I actually have 2 Dansco 7070 albums that are tricked out with the modern U.S. coinage pages along with the gold pages. One almost complete and the other I bought to flip. Got em back when you could still buy the extra pages.

There's a difference between spending $300 average - which at 76 coins in the album is a budget of $22,600 (76 x $300) and "I don't want to spend any more than $300 for a particular coin" - which I believe is the goal in this case.
When I did my 7070, I set a goal of wanting to do coins in VF or better; I didn't have a hard ceiling on price but anything $200 or over I had to think about what grade I thought was actually realistic. Some of the coins cost face and some of them in higher grades get crazy expensive. The 7070 is a set of compromises if you are on a budget.
I've learned so much about American history as well as about U. S. coins while putting my 7070 together. And I'm sure that I learned only a fraction of what some of you have. Still have the two Seated Silver Dollars to complete it. I had posted on the"What are your numismatic goals for 2021?" thread that this is my short term goal. I've started saving. All in all I think that it's not a bad idea for everyone to do some version of a 7070 just for the exposure to the different coins. I've really enjoyed my adventure so far.
Congrats on the start of your 7070 journey. I hope you have a lot of fun along the way and end up with something you are proud to own.
With your budget of only $300 per coin, however, you are definitely going to have to make some concessions when it comes to focusing solely on MS grade coins. The Seated Liberty dollars, for example, can be quite pricey at that grade and, unfortunately, you may need to abandon any hope of finding a Classic Head Large Cent (1808-1814) in MS at any price. I periodically upgrade the Classic Head Large Cent in my album and have finally found one that I can look at without throwing up a little bit, but even then it is far from MS and cost a lot more than $300:
I never said that $300 was a hard limit. I'm going to try to keep most coins under $300 , but I expected a few over that. I just need to know which ones are over $300 in a nice grade. Looking at a few of the sets, I have an idea but I've gotten some great advice. I have one more note and then I'll start on this one. Some weeks will be IHC, other weeks will be 7070. So far I think I'm doing well on what I picked up. I'll also cost conscious and trying to avoid ebay so this may take a while or it may not. Do you all want to be involved in the process?
Quote: I just need to know which ones are over $300 in a nice grade.
It all depends on what you consider a nice grade. This whole process is subjective. Your idea of a nice set and someone else's, maybe completely different.
There are so many different variables; dates, budget, eye appeal, timeline, problem free, grades, etc...
