Jim0815 Pillar of the Community United States 5239 Posts	Posted 12/19/2020 3:02 pm I purchased this 1878 P Morgan silver dollar and through the loupe noticed some remarkable notching in the devises. It's weight is 26.53 and have yet to find anything on this coin. Normally not a Morgan guy and mainly stick to Lincoln cents. Interested on your thoughts on this. Report this Post to the Staff

It's R-4 which means it's a moderately scarce coin, think of it like a 1998 WAM or something. You can find one unattributed with a bit of searching and it'll take time, but it's not impossibly hard. The VAM-166 that is on the obverse does not show this on its reverse. New VAM? The last pic was borrowed from VAM World. Report this Post to the Staff
Tanman2001 Pillar of the Community United States 4402 Posts	Posted 12/21/2020 5:44 pm Those D's do not look like a match. Your coin still has a complete D, albeit the bottom is a little thin. VAM-163 and VAM-167 share a reverse die and VAM-167 has better full coin pics on VAMWorld, so you can use that one to compare the reverse: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...78-P_VAM-167 The reverse of VAM-163/167 does look to have the thinness on the D that you noticed. But a better reverse marker might be the broken R in TRUST, which I can see in your full coin pic. Report this Post to the Staff
