Would like some opinions on this. I'm told that PCGS grades quite differently for C mint coins (and have experienced that) because strike was all over the place. Going against photograde, the obverse seems VF to me while the reverse seems VG. I've had a couple of dealers I trust look at it and confirm authenticity, but it'd be nice to have an idea what I should value it at if I send it off, cause PCGS doesn't even list a price below Fine, and even that is high enough that I might have to send on a different tier. I'd specifically like to know if 1838c's are famous for weak strike and would love to find a graded example that's similar to mine. Edited by jbohanon 12/25/2020 01:26 am

I think that the obverse is too weak for a VF. The 1838-C isn't known for insanely poor strikes, but they arent usual great especially on the obverse. Generally the obverse appears a grade higher than the reverse.
I grade the obverse VG10 so that's likely the actual grade. However this coin looks clean so itd get a Details grade.
Based on my albeit limited knowledge and what price guides I can reference, VG10 straight would be maybe $3000-3200, but with a cleaned comment I have no idea.

Thanks for the reply. Could you explain why you think the obverse would grade VG10 (if it didn't get details)? The ANA grading standards doesn't even list anything for VG. I guess I was just looking at the hair as well as LIBERTY to try to grade the obverse. Here's Photograde's VF20 example: https://i.PCGS.com/s3/cu-PCGS/Photo...c2.5-20o.jpgHalf of LIBERTY is gone and there's no detail at all in the hair under the band. That said, I was browsing Heritage sold and did find an NGC graded VG details that did look similar which sold for a little over 1k in 2012 which is where NGC values a VG, but they don't have any VG coins in their census. Maybe it's just the lighting I used, but none of the people who looked at the coin before mentioned cleaning. Really not trying to be argumentative, here. Just trying to learn. I think for some of the coins I have that are on the borderline, the best option might be to drop at a show and pay with a voucher (assuming we ever have big national shows again).

You can go to NGC coin explorer and they have a photo of a NGC F12 that has similar wear to yours. I would put your coin between VG10 and F12 based on the NGC example. There is a possibility it could grade VG Details Cleaned but hard to tell from your photos. NGC shows a large price drop between VG and F.

It is cleaned but I believe it would straight grade as a (weak) F12. I'd go low on the value and say no more than $2500.

Quote: Here's Photograde's VF20 example Best advice I can give is ignore photograde. It's literally useless. Here's a PCGS F-15 example. https://coins.ha.com/itm/classic-qu...ption-071515Your coin has much less obverse detail with near identical strike quality.

Photograde can be quite frustrating. I wonder if they pick a random coin rather than a typical coin. For this series there is a huge noticeable difference between the four VF grades.
Valuation seems tricky because I hardly see any recent auctions for this coin period, so they don't have a lot of data. Neither PCGS nor NGC even has a straight graded VG.
If I ever get around to submitting, I'll post an update in the slab. Certainly seems worth submitting in any case for authentication purposes given the extreme low mintage. Hope they'll be generous in case the do value it higher and not charge me for the extra tier.

Following up. Straight grade 20! Merry early Christmas to me! Oh, except they did upcharge me because the value is quite a bit over what I submitted it as.

Amazing. As I opened the topic it looked like F details.
