And Returns Them! Quote: Honest woman finds $97K in restroom, returns it
(12-09) 18:14 PST Murfreesboro, Tenn. (AP) --
A Murfreesboro woman says she returned $97,000 she claims to have found in a Cracker Barrel restroom, but police said Tuesday they have no report of the find. Billie Watts, 75, told The Daily News Journal that she discovered the money inside a tapestry bag hanging from a hook on a stall door last Thursday.
But five days later, the money and its anonymous owner remain something of a mystery in the community, where police said that they have no report of the find.
While digging through the bag to figure out its owner, Watts says she found a bundle of neatly stacked $1,000 bills.
Watts said she and her husband took the money home, but later called the restaurant back and asked if there was a lost-and-found department. She was told yes, and left her number.
A woman called about 15 minutes later and verified she was the owner by identifying pictures left in the bag. Watts returned the bag to the owner, whom she described as an elderly woman, but said she does not have the woman's last name or phone number.
Watts said the woman told her that the money came from selling her home and her belongings and that she was going to start a new life in Florida with her son. Watts says the woman offered to pay her $1,000, but Watts refused it.
A manager of the Cracker Barrel restaurant, Bill Shupp, said no employees actually saw the money or the elderly owner. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/artic...02.DTL&tsp=1

I do not buy this story at all... Quote: Watts said the woman told her that the money came from selling her home and her belongings and that she was going to start a new life in Florida with her son. How did she get 97 $1000 bills from selling her house? I was not aware that you could legally carry out large real estate transactions in cash and a bank is not just going to cash a check and proceed to hand 97 of them to you considering they were recalled in 1969 and they have to be sent to the Fed for shredding.

I'm with you jbuck and biokemist6. I am very skeptical of this story. Parts of it might be true, like woman found the bag and called the Cracker Barrel and even returned it. But 97 $1000 bills? Please. You don't just get $1000 from anywhere for a house sale. $1000 bills in that quantity are hard to come by- in fact probably very very rare. Wasn't the last time they printed them in the 1930s? When I see pictures of those bills and they are authenticated, I will be less skeptical.

Come to think of it, the lady might be having trouble seeing and maybe they were $100 bills...

[font=Ariel]My brother in law has a real estate title company. He occasionally has cash transactions for hundreds of thousands. I wonder when the US govt. is going to start issuing $500 and $100o bills. Some people have large wads of C-notes with them. Think of the poor drug dealers and the big winners at the casino. It's getting rough on those guys . I don't have the problem, myself.
