Hi all,

I was going through my 1964 nickels and found what I thought was PMD on the left leaf, but then noticed the KG. I then noticed the beaver head and back appear to be doubled. On the obverse the GRA and Queen forehead.

Comments welcome as to what is going on with this coin.

I agree with That coin dude, what you are seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling.

However, 1964, 1965, and 1966 nickels all have a minor Doubled Die Reverse, I would say at least over half of the reverse dies for each year show a small spread of hub doubling which makes it actually fairly common.

For 1964 - You should be able to find a small split in the tip of the stem of the left leaf on the reverse and the tip of the 6 in the date.

for 1965 - You should be able to find a small split in the tip of the stem on the left leaf and the right leaf, along with "5 Cents".

for 1966 - You should be able to find a small split in the tip of the stem on the left leaf and the tips of the "66" in the date.

The only DDR for those 3 years worth keeping if found is the 1965 DDR Doubled 5 that shows a moderate spread of hub doubling on the "5" in the date.

Thanks everyone!

I'll keep an eye out for the 1965.

Now you tell me... after I had recently gone through (and subsequently sold) a mint bag of each from 1964 and 1965.

I started finding a lot of 64's 65's, and 66's showing an almost identical spread in the same locations and while checking some really high-grade 1964 examples I managed to find the doubling on two of them and the rest looked normal. I then used those examples to match against others that I would find and even on circulated nickels you can see it but it's fairly minor.

Also, I previously said "For 1964 - You should be able to find a small split in the tip of the stem of the left leaf on the reverse and the tip of the 6 in the date" but that was not correct after double-checking my notes, it should read...

For 1964 - You should be able to find a small split in the top of the stem on the Right leaf on the reverse, splitting on the right side of the second "A" in "CANADA" and the tip of the "6" in the date.
