Good afternoon, Trying to generate a discussion on NGC versus PCGS grading, specifically on MS Canadian older gold coins. I specifically mentioned the $5's and $10's but this could also pertain to C Sovereigns as well. We could also include ICCS grading, although I only very rarely see higher MS Canadian gold graded in ICCS flips. So I've been watching auctions and comparing grading between NGC and PCGS. My gut is telling me that NGC graded coins specifically in this area tend to be fairly loosely graded. I have a tendency to prefer PCGS over NGC anyways, but I'm more trying to figure out if I should just avoid NGC graded MS altogether if I can't get them for a price more appropriate for at least one number lower, or am I being oversensitive? I have an NGC 1914 $5 graded MS64 and I feel it's really unlikely to make 64 with any other company. More like 63 or maybe 63+ on a good day. I feel like in the US they see them as roughly equivalent, and maybe they are with US coins? Thoughts? Lev

I probably wasn't very clear. My concern is over the actual grading.
I have no doubt there are some people, particularly in the US, who don't care and will pay the same for either. I'm more concerned with what the actual grade is in the slab, NGC versus PCGS. Would you expect that an MS64 graded 1914 $5 NGC would be really similar to one graded the same grade by PCGS or not? If not how do you think it would be different? Does anyone else have both in their collection and can indicate from their own personal coins what they see? Or perhaps a dealer or two could share their thoughts?
Gold is a lot different than silver. It doesn't tarnish the same way a silver coin left out for 100 years will tarnish. The hoard coins mostly have a noticeable patina on them, but it's not nearly as significant as what happens with silver. That's why I specifically asked about older Canadian gold coins. It's a little different than grading MS Victoria 50 cent pieces.
So I'm mainly looking on opinions on how others may shop for these items, if they do. I know it's a fairly narrow audience but it's what I'm interested in. I'm learning as I go!

I provided the ebay link so that you could look at the coins in the slabs and see how they compare by using the magnified image thru the slab. Then go back with the PCGS #'s to maybe see a better photo .. same with NGC

Recent experience over the last year . NGC grades C Mint sovereigns fairly conservatively No experience with PCGS ICCS pretty much on par with NGC.

I have not seen a huge range in person, but I seemed to remember NGC and PCGS being pretty similar in grading these.
Personnaly I think both are pretty loose on these. I think there was a good discussion on how gold is graded looser than other medals because it is softer in the long thread when these first came out.
I would agree on the NGC sovereign, the standards seem to be tighter, but have not had many comaprisons, the 63/64 seem nicer than comparable in $5/$10.
When looking at these, the lighting and angle makes all the difference. A graded 64 can look like an ugly baggy 61 with the wrong angle and light or it can look like a smooth surface 66 (assuming no facial hits).
A huge chunk of the hoard was graded by NGC/PCGS by a dealer when it came out. The ones left in the original box are now the minority if I remember correctley. And pre-hoard sales of the coins seemed a bit thin compared to now.
No real experience with ICCS on these.
Just kicking myself now for not completing my set prior to latest gold price increase, was able to get 4/6 at issue price.

Yes I wish I had started collecting much earlier. I only really found out about them this fall. I haven't found any deals yet but I do have 4/6 now myself plus one duplicate still in the original premium hand selected box. I'm working on higher grade ones so that the high value of gold isn't really a factor. Eventually I'll have a full set of them MS64 or higher I hope.

@Silver101 gold is new for me, just started on 2020. I collect banknotes, particularly DoC and all Canadian coins, heavy to Victoria, particularly 50 cents. I have a smattering of other things like 1937 specimen coins and random MS in older 1c 5c 10c coins. I'm at least a little interested in all things canadian, mainly 1858 to 1936 and mainly silver or gold. A bit of an eclectic collector. :)

@Levaril - that's much broader than me! Though I've only been collecting for a few years now. Still working on the Newfoundland key dates which have become something of an obsession...

I haven't got into Newfoundland coins in a big way. I have an 1882-H $2 gold in MS63 which is quite nice and I think maybe a random 50 cent in circulated condition. That's about it. I have very little provincial coinage. Been concentrating on older Canadian silver mainly. Too many options and too little money! Lol.
