The S does look off to me too, not sure why someone would counterfeit this penny unless they didn't finish the job by putting the V.D.B. On the back. Otherwise ift looks to be a EF45 possible AU50.

Agree, the mint mark looks way off. Could it possibly be flattening from old circulation hits?

I was thinking the same thing but I don't think this coin saw a ton of circulation wear ; look at that reverse .

It would only take one or two coincidental hits a long time ago. Die crack 9 to bust? Looks so genuine.

MM looks damaged to me. I'd call it a genuine VF30.

Does look like the blocked serif S that was used in 1909, just flattened a bit from a hit. The only other question is the location of the S.
Not much detail left in Lincolns hair - I'll go VF25

Agree VF-25. Is that a die crack from 9 to bust?

@Coinfrog - the line from the 9 to the bust is a scratch, I just took a closer look at it to make sure.

Genuine I can see the dot in the upper curve of the S.
VF details scratched.
Could also be FS-1501 S/S.

Follow up pics are better...VF20 obverse worn more than reverse...half of the ear is gone and the hair is flat. Plus the scratch.

Odd, the scratch appears to be under the MM or it's actually two scratches. The top part of the S has no scratch?

I think I do see the die chip in the upper part of the S, hard to tell. The MM is likely real but it scares me enough that I wouldn't be interested in this coin. Not many would go through the trouble to fake a VF 09-S, a lot of work for not much. LOL

i cant match the MM location to any of the known dies. the MM is distorted so it might be throwing off the edges of it but I'm not liking it. what bothers me is when you blow it up there appears to be all kinds of metal around the MM that shouldnt be there.

1909-S-LWC-For-Grading

arrows point to the erroneous metal.
