Sounds as if he didn't have much of a choice.

Other countries should have a more reasonable approach to treasure finds like the UK. Then this sort of thing would not have to happen.

Just to be clear, that first photo CNN has says "Getty Images" so it is stock images and not from this lot. I suspect there is nothing of that level in the lot. And the huge number is probably tiny fragments of artifacts of bronze, and low end coins. After a year of our Newsmedia hyping everything up I expect they felt the actual photos like the few they show of the items were not interesting enough and they had to embellish to get your attention. Plus those links for the word "French" and "Roman coins" go to completely different stories and make no sense at all.

OK I see the video and all the red cases are indeed in the video of what they took in. So I was wrong to assume that first CNN photo was not from the lot but all that old very well cleaned set of coins in those cases may be part of the over 27,000 pieces they took in, but were not part of the just over 14,000 coins he said he dug up. I was just saying that did not look dug up recently but I should have read the story a bit more sorry. Again sorry.

It seems a bit improbable (though not impossible) that one person happened to go out and "dig up" the over 27,000 pieces that he had in his possession
It might represent a lifetimes work of digging holes or it could be the "stuff" found by other people
Fourteen thousand coins could possibly come from a single find or they might be the product of just a single years worth of harvesting the fields by various small town "syndicates"
I suspect it much more likely that he is a black market dealer in antiquities and probably acquired these things from a variety of people and sources who much prefer to remain anonymous
If he has sources and "clients" (I think it probable) then they are certainly less than thrilled about the prospect of being investigated
He might fear his clients more than he fears the French police !
