Hay all!! Is there a simple way to clean the fingerprints and sticky soda goo off coins without having to use distilled water. Would a terry cloth work or would that mess em up? Also I just received my West Point Nickel Proof and wondering if it is ok to take out of the little plastic bag it came in and put it in a protective case. With gloves of course. Also how cant you determine the amount a coin is off on a broad or off center strike, and what is the easiest way to determine the difference between DD and MD. I'm still getti fool even going on mine to look. I would have searched the web for these answers, but I do not trust putting my coins in vinegar, lime juice.... sorry if I misspelled words .

If you know the sticky stuff is from soda, you should use water, preferably distilled. Most grocery stores carry it for just over a dollar a bottle. Organic solvents are not the best choice for removing sugar. If the goo is something greasy, then you should use something different. Vinegar and lime juice are acids and can cause a chemical reaction, carrying a risk of damaging the coin.
If the fingerprints have tarnished, you will not be able to remove them without damaging the coin (to the best of my knowledge).

I personally would use acetone. But I agree with tdziemia about fingerprints.

If the residue is known to be a sugar, sugars have very low solubility in acetone. Water (including tap water) will probably work better. But if the OP has acetone around, it doesn't hurt to try. I agree that most other gooey stuff is likely to respond better to acetone.

Agree, fingerprints are best left alone.

As for your other questions, I think the best way for you to figure out how far off an off-center strike is would be to compare to different PGCS or NGC certified off-center strikes. Look at 10%, 20%, etc. and you can get a feel for what the percentages equate to on a coin. As for MD vs. DD, one quick-look check is the classic MD is within the regular footprint of the lettering whereas DD is beyond the normal lettering. @coop is the resident expert on this topic here at CCF. Here are just a couple of his hundreds of pictures and posts showing the difference: http://goccf.com/t/245603http://goccf.com/t/383495 credit for photo goes to @coop with thanks for teaching us all about this stuff

Fingerprints are removable with acetone. If they have been on the coin for too long the oils (containing acid) will etch the metal surface and cannot be restored.

Quote: how cant you determine the amount a coin is off on a broad or off center strike (Maximum displacement from normal/Diameter)x100% You can get close enough using a ruler with mm on it. For the four cents shown below, starting from the upper right and going clockwise, I get 21%, 8%, 20%, 16%.

Wow! Thanks all. I am learning alot, and I will say there is alot to learn and especially attention to detail. On the washing of coins I will get distilled water, but should I just lay the washed coin on the towel and let dry? I dont want to dry it off and scratch it. I will treat the coins the way I did the Anodized brass for my Dress Blues. I will leave the fingerprints alone unless they are mine by accident. MD and DD info is great. I actually was thinking the opposite and thought DD was MD in Coops picture. I was just gonna shoot from the hip on the off center and use a ruler at the center of the off strike and detect from the width of the coin. Thanks again for you time. Really appreciated.
