I came across this interesting tidbit of information while reading Boultons' Soho mint notes from 1788 and thought I would share it with you all. He was describing what would be done with the copper ingots before rolling them.

"The copper cakes were pickled or scoured in urine or aqua regia to remove scale"

He did not state where or from what he acquired the urine from. I also recall reading somewhere about mint employees (Soho, Heaton) having to vacate the mint because of the overwhelming fumes from the acid, so I guess it would make sense to have the urine around for back up.

Happy New Year everyone!

I thought that's how everyone removed scale from their copper cakes.

Historically, aged or fermented urine (known as lant) was also used for gunpowder production, household cleaning, tanning of leather and dyeing of textiles.

They didn't have Coke in them thar olden times!
As a kid I used to clean Aussie pennies with Coke.

2 P or not to 2 P, that is the question.
They used such to make gunpowder centuries ago, so why not?

@ T-BOP:- That is what they used to use for tanning leather, and is the reason why tanneries stunk so much.
