Hi all, this may not be the best place to ask this, but looking for some advice. I would like to embed a quarter onto a walking stick and so need to curve it to the shape of the stick.. What is the best way to do this. My first though was to hammer it , initially around a metal pipe to get the shape but I dont want to damage the coin.. Maybe use a rubber mallet? Im not planning to use a valuable coin, State Quarter maybe and think it would be a good addition to the stick.. Thoughts appreciated.

silverexile, I wish I could offer an idea, but the only one I have involves a blow torch and it would likely do a fair amount of damage to the coin. I'll have to subscribe to this post to see what kind of ideas people offer.

I'm thinking a number of kerf cuts on the side that will be imbedded might help you to form the coin to the walking stick.

@silver, you are looking for a "dapping block" I think.
Added: Actually now that I read through your post more closely, it isn't clear to me. Are you looking to have this coin on the pommel or the shaft?

thanks for the advice, amazed that I have gone through xx years of life without knowing what a dapping block is ...
@spence.. was thinking of putting it on the shaft so unsure if dapping block would work for that.. but good though

If the shaft of the cane is wide enough it would be easier flattening the cane with a Forstner bit and glue the quarter into the recess.............

Member nohope587 may have some suggestions as he makes various types of jewelry with coins.

I would think some form of a press brake.

Anneal the coin use a black sharpie marker on the coin, the heat it with a torch until the marks disappear. Then quench it in water put a piece of leather on a ring mandrel and use a nylon hammer to hammer the coin around the mandrel until its the correct diameter for the cane.

Simply use a plastic or rubber mallet.

Agree with nohope, leather and a hammer would be the easiest with minimal if any distortion/damage.
