Is it possible to have the "D" mint mark in the correct position and angle for FS-508 and still not have the separated D to the south? This coin has wear and carbon spots that make the markers and any southern "D" invisible.

Has anyone seen this in a mint state with correct position and no mint mark?

In my searching this is the only mint mark that lines up with that exact position. So being in that area isn't common.

Overlap picture is from Copper Coins.

Your overlay looks pretty close. Can you angle the light source and see any raised elements that might point to the shadow D? Most times in LDS the top left corner shows as a small triangle and shows through strongest.

Edit: considering that there is nothing present to suggest a shadow D other than the relatively close MM location, I'd say it is not FS-508.

Sorry to say, if you don't have the secondary then, you don't have an RPM. The same with only having markers but, no RPM.

There are several dies with the mint mark in roughly that spot.

Thanks CH27, Tropicalbats, and CentSation. I was just curious if there were blank examples. Good to know.

sheldius,

If you are using a USB microscope with LED lighting to look at this, I would suggest turning off the LEDs and shining a flashlight across the surface of the coin to get a better look at any bumps or ridges. You may also find it useful to mute the lighting with paper or cloth in front of the light.

Depending on the die stage/state and circulation wear, the secondary can show more or less.

Good Luck.

Your coins mint mark appears to be slightly close IMO, it's not the variety
