Hello everyone, I have a coin I can use some info on. It's an 1836 Indian Head penny that weights only 4.3 grams instead of 4.8. I'm trying to figure out if it's becaus it's either gold,on the wrong planchet,or just a regular coin that's just a little light. I know I can easily take it somewhere local to figure out the gold part but honestly I get more help here so thank y'all in advance and it's not in the best of shape so hopefully these pictures will be enough for y'all to even make a determination. Again thank y'all.

I thought the proper weight for a CN cent was closer to 4.7 gr, but in any event I'm guessing the corrosion could have eaten away enough metal to lighten it that much.

4.7 is correct. 4.67 is spot on.

Corrosion could definitely be the reason for the lightening of it.

That's kinda what I was thinking also.thank you. When I was researching this coin some of the sites said 4.67,some said 4.7,and others said 4.8 but I'm learning and that's why I love this forum because people are quick to make sure to point out your info is off. I respect the straight forward no sugar coating way of thinking people have here. Thanks again.

I'm agreeing with both of y'all and thanks for the info on the weight though if 4.67 spot on wouldn't that make 4.7 incorrect but excited.

"Copper-Nickel Oak Wreath With Shield (1860-1864)
Designer - Engraver: James B LongacreMetal Composition: 88% Copper - 12% Nickel
Diameter: 19 mm Mass / Weight: 4.67 grams"

Also agree the the weight loss is just from 157+ years of wear

EDIT: "Information" came from a random internet sight.
