The previous year used a font that was fairly bold and had flat feet on the bottom of every letter.

The upcoming year, the mint started using a newer font style with an arched font that had indented arches on the feet of each letter.

Are you sure this is an intentional design change? It sounds a lot like a sign of die wear to me without seeing a picture of it.

spruett001,
I can see where you would think that, but no it is not from die wear. It is the exact same font used from the previous year as it is the standard font used for that year. As for intentional, I'm not sure, like mentioned earlier the use of obverse dies from previous years is a common occurrence, so maybe.

You tell me, do these fonts look the same to you?

Well, out of those three images some would say the first image shown above is the die that is the different year from the rest, and the second and third images are from the same die and year..... Wrong.

The second and third images are two completely different years!

The first image and the second image are from the same year and should look the same but don't, the third image is from the previous year. Yet images two and three look more identical than images one and two.

Die wear? not likely, as I have found examples that include Die Deterioration and Machine Doubling while still clearly showing the differences.
