I also love classic French coin designs. This is one of my favorites: I'd love to have one of those Guadeloupe francs! The island is still French - indeed, nowadays it is a French Overseas Department. I went there in 2014 on a cruise, but unfortunately didn't get any unusual coins in change - they now use the Euro!

to 100 % Both la Semeuse/the Soweress and the golden Marianne are stunning beauties! Although there are many beautiful French silver and gold coins, my favorite is actually a bronze, also with Marianne. And yes, France is what my collection focuses on

Quote: Guadaloupe, which was once owned by France. Guadeloupe is still part of France I agree that France has some really beautiful coin designs as the contributors here have shown. I made decisions on my collecting themes for reasons that were not aesthetic, and still have some coins with La Semeuse, but none of those earlier beauties. As for "why I (too) love the French" it has less to do with coins than the value they place on flavorful, local food and wines, and other aspects of their cultural patrimony. The St. George reverse of the British sovereign is another beautiful coin design, and the reverse of large Papal STates silver in the 17th century is often as nice as a piece of Baroque sculpture. I no longer have many Mexico coins in my collection, but there are many beautiful designs there as well. The eagle & snake design has an enduring beauty comparable to that of our American eagle. Much earlier, the Cap & Ray design is also very attractive in better grades. Here is a modern Mexico coin that combines that eagle design with a really attractive representation from Aztec culture:

'Hercule' by Augustin Dupre is another of my favorites:

One of those old gold Roosters has been on my want list for many years. Now that gold has gone insane it's unlikely I'll ever pick one up. Love that design!

I also love the French coins. Especially the classic, early Franc issues. Here is a 5 Centimes from Dupre

That is an amazingly well preserved 5 centimes, @maudry! And with French coins it is allowed to have more than one favorite, @NumisRob - I have several, too Keeping to small change, this is another one I really like:

I like the design on the early French coins, particularly the aluminium coins. As the material is soft the strike is great. This is a 2 francs from French Somaliland. Steve :)

@tdziemia: I think Mexico's eagle and snake is pretty neat, too. I'm a bit partial to the old Mexico cap-and-ray years, tho (and the eagle and snake back in those days had a bit more oomph, IMO). Here's one of mine (it's actually silver, not gold-ish as shown)

They're out there and not hard to find. Mine was under $60 off a popular auction site (I tend to do the Buy It Now price if it's fairly reasonable because quite frankly, I'm no skinflint and I don't have the time or energy to watch bids like a hawk). The challenge is finding one that hasn't been worn down half to death.

I've always wondered what the French designers of the early 1900s might've done withthe USA's Walker half or the American Silver Eagle, which IMO was either overdone or underdone. To me, the ASE obverse seemed slapped together in a sterile way, and the reverse has always just strucke me as nothing special. There was no softness to the design, like the French coinage brought out. Again, just my rusty 2 cents.
