Hi guys,

I have this 1956 Lincoln Wheat penny and would like to know what the piece of metal is considered, located at Lincoln's Bow tie on the Obverse (See close up Photo). Is this a die chip or a die break error?

I've seen that before on 56's, I think it was called a die chip. It isn't seen on other 56 cents.

The master hub was wearing down during many years of use. In the 1960's they tried enhancing the profile area of the master hub, but in 1969 they replaced the master hub:

Note how the die had swollen through many years of creating new master dies? Also note the hear sizes. That is how much the die had swollen:

Looking at the 1968 cents, they realized it was time to recreate a new master hub. But your is a die chip, where part of that area on that die broke away. When a piece breaks off the die, then that are will start striking coins with a raised area (the void that was left on the die) and that is what you are seeing.

In the 1969 edition of "THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE Lincoln Cent" by Jean Cohen she lists 176 errors in the section "DIEBREAKS AT TIE". 42 1956 LWC are listed starting on page 272.
Today this is called a die chip.
