I have a 1981 D mark dime that appears to be copper. I was needing to know if this is a error coin or just because of age, toning, environment? Please help with this. Also are the letters under the neck normal?

Environmental tarnishing/toning/staining. May have been buried in soil at some point of it's life. Your coin photography is good, but it is a bit blurry and needs to be focused a little more, please.

Not a mint error; post mint damage ( PMD).

Possibly a metal detector find.

Yes @jes2, the color is due to environmental toning, such as from being buried. One quick way to confirm is to check the weight. Off-metal or missing-clad strikes won't have the correct mass.
