1849 Netherlands 25 Cents - No Dot

In the standard work about Dutch coins: J Schulman de Nederlandse Munten 1795 - 1975, three variants of the 1849 25 cents piece are listed. These can be distinguished by the position of the last 9 in the date. A varian without dot is not listed for this year. It is however listed for the 1848 coin and the 1849 10 cents. A quick check on internet for this no-dot coin did not give any result. Also it is not listed in the most recent catalog of Dutch coins I have (2007).

I did find 25 cents coins from some other reigns and years that occur without dot and are also not listed by Schulman. In my opinion this lack of a dot after the year could be due to a "filled" die.

To find the coins enter "25 cents Willem"in the search box and set the "periode" to "1849 na Chr."in both fields As you can see also the right hand side of the lower bar of the T, the 4 and 1 are missing. This confirms that the die was partly filled. Another possibility for the missing dot would be wear or erasure on purpose. This does not seem the case with your coin. Perhaps if you look at the position of the dot with high magnification some remains may be visible.

Yes, probably yours is an error coin. But a minor error only. As for value, I doubt it would be much more valuable than a regular 25 cents coin.
