Am wondering what this mark is under the A in States. Looks like some type of device strike but may be a coin strike as well. Then I thought it might come off with a soft tooth pick but it did not as you can see in the close2 photo. Thoughts please. Thanks

That is a Ding from another coin, look on the edge of the quarter and you will see Reeding, that is what caused it. Just PMD.

Hi Dude. Yeah that was my first thought also but the strike is about a cm across and I don't see how the reed edge can make that imprint. I suspect PMD but just don't see it from the rim. Thanks

Possibly from a larger denomination coin contact. But that is the cause.

The coin appears to be an earlier die state strike of the die. Note the smooth fields and full devices on the strike.
