Not a huge thing, but the coin was in nice shape so picked it up for the error. Appears that the coin lost a bit of material due to delamination, creating a weak strike in that area. Could be somewhat in conjunction with a tapered planchet as well, but not really sure exactly what is what here. This was an assisted cherrypick by a CCF member kind enough to pass it along. Thanks! 1940-D Lincoln Wheat cent mint error - Lamination loss/weak strike 2.95g

Interesting - why is this not just a straight grease-fill issue rather than a lamination? I'm sure you're right, just asking.

There is a clear lamination flake along the rim above the LI in LIBERTY, plus with the rims gone pretty sure grease can't do that. Third thing is coin is underweight, suggesting loss of material either due to tapering or lamination loss.

Nice pick. I have a 1944 up on ebay right now with a more serious lam causing weakness on the obv of the coin. Not in near that good a shape though.

A very beautiful coin with an interesting lamination. One of the more unique laminations I've seen.

The way the rims are made me think it was a weird ragged clip. I don't know the rims confuse me, maybe it delaminated before being rolled?

Very nice find! Certainly easily visible. I agree with your assessment.

If it is a lamination issue, then it will be under weight. If it were caused by a grease issue, then the weight would be normal. Lamination loss post strike near rim area: Split planchet pre strike: Note the devices are not as high as normal, but full in shape but weak near the rims. Rim weak because of loss of thickness of the planchet.
