I used to have an end goal of "a coin from every AD year". With further research I now know that this is probably not possible (many years in the 5th century, and possibly also some in the 4th, do not appear to have any dated coins), but it would still be awesome to at least try to get a coin from every AD year that does have any.
That aside, I'm working on some sets, but I'm not sure if there's any that I would consider an end goal rather than just a long-term goal. And a lot depends on what happens if/when I actually get a job.

Well I only have about 20-30 years to finish.
Well one of my goals is to have a complete run of every mint set (uncirculated, proof, Silver proof from start to finish. On this goal I just need 1936 to 1955 silver proof sets - a goal that may never be realised.
Another is to have every coin minted in circulated condition from 1900 to present of all denominations. Cents to quarters is completely finished but for the 1909 S VDB cent. Now working on ¢50 and dollars.
Not sure why I want to to this, as I have no one to give it to anymore. I might arrange to have it sold on the market after I'm gone.

I had a goal of completing the Standing Lib quarter set in AU-58 and up, an Indian quarter eagle set in BU and better, a date set of Bust dollars (which has since expanded to include major varieties), and I completed those except the Bust Dollar varieties (ongoing), so rather than start a new set, I decided to become a dealer. I get to buy more coins that way.

I don't really have an end goal as long as Canada and the US keep issuing coins. Long term goals include every year of every denomination of Canadian coins (except 1921 5 & 50 cents and gold) and a nice slabbed set of Morgan dollars with New Orleans mintmark. |

Me personally, I want to achieve a true US Type Set, I now have everything except the really expensive stuff like 1793 copper, Half Disme, Gobrecht dollar, that kind of thing. Oh and early gold, don't even get me started on that. More to the point though, whatever one's goal, once it is achieved we are still not satisfied, and then what will be the next thing.. well that is human nature, never satisfied, and that is a good thing as it means we never just sit back and rest on our laurels, always upwards and onwards :) |

There is no end. Coins go on each year until we enter the time of digital currency. I believe coin collectiong is all in the journey, as in life.
I return to the collection each year for a month or so to search for varieties or errors that I have missed in the past, and yes I do always find something new (to me that is).
I like to admire the design of a coin and the quality of the strike, not so much in the new coinage as I believe the quality to the plated and mixed metals makes for a week coin.
Good for errors

My end goal ... legacy. I love coins and "stacking" so much that I don't sell much. What I do sell is to fund the "perfection" of my collection. I don't mean that literally, but intend to continually upgrade my collection, by having TPG slabbed coins and then selling the coins not worth grading to fund my growing collection. Its for my wife, kids and grandkids. |

I'm going for a full set of Canadian circulation coins, not too concerned about the varieties, but will likely add them as I go. Currently the list is just under 1000 coins. I have 31 to go. Then I guess it is time to upgrade towards MS coins. I suspect the list will get stalled around 10ish coins, as they become progressively quite expensive at a grade I am looking for.
A dangerous thread here, with some great new ideas, thanks for sharing your collection goals. The type sets are starting to sound very appealing to me and a lot less space intensive.

There really isn't an end goal for me right now. I'm working on many sets right now, and likely will work on each of them for years. I've gotten more selective with my purchases since I started collecting in earnest around 6 years ago.
I'm only 34, goal would be for at least one of my three sons to get into collecting.
