Of what details remain on the date, I'd say it looks real
The 1 is characteristically fat, the 7 is skinny, and what's left of the 9s looks fine. Which all seems to put it in the clear.

If it weren't for the PMD would this have been a good candidate for a PO1 (not sure on grade) Lowest grade TPG slab for collectors of such? |

It's a fake (altered date actually). On all three 1799 varieties the highest wave of the hair is slightly right of the center of the R, an this one it is under the left edge of the upright of the R. also on al the 99's LIBERTY is distant from the bust, on this one it is down close.

I have no idea, but that second 9 sure does look suspicious. Considering the condition of the rest of the coin, that 9 is pretty clear. Does look to sit a bit lower/recessed into the fields. If it was modified/tooled I would say it was done later in the coins life and didn't see a lot of heavy wear post modification.  |

Agree, the color and sharpness of that 9 are noticeably different from the rest of the coin.

@Conder101 nailed it. It's a genuine 1798. You can see the small repetitive vise marks on the obverse above the date area. The line above the date is from heating the coin to alter and re-carve the date. (EDIT: the line isn't the base of the bust. It's the ripple between the base of the bust and the top of the altered 9.) I guess that makes it a brand new garage version of the 1799/8. Edited by fortcollins

Besides, the second 9 is much smaller than the first 9, at least as far as I can tell. Fortcollins confirming settles it for me as well. A 1799 would have been a nice dream though Grape! I've also become a lot more accustomed to gimp, everything's' been tuned to my liking. PS has a much better internal processing system for image manipulation and is runs smoother, no argument. I think I paid like, sub $5 for this because I was 99% sure that it was a fake, especially given that the only digit visible was magically the last 9. Guess I'll give it away at somepoint, don't have anything better to do with it. |
