I'm kinda new at this. I have some coins with stuff on them. How should I clean them without damaging them? What about fingerprints? I see the following solvents offered at coin supply stores on the Internet. Which are safe to use? Also, how should they be applied?
Koinsolv
Z'est
MS-70
Nic-A-Lene

Any recommendations are sincerely appreciated.

Before too long someone will come on and tell you NEVERNEVERNEVER clean your coins. Don't rub 'em, scratch 'em or scrape 'em. Wear only lint-free 300-thread count white Egyptian cotton gloves when handling your coins. ETC, etc etc. blah, blah, blah. But they are your coins and if you want to experiment then go ahead. Try one or more of the products listed after reading the instructions and let us know how it went. Good luck!

If you want to keep them and enjoy them and are put off by their current condition then go ahead.

The only reason not to clean a coin is if it's for investment purposes only and cleaning would lower the value. Otherwise enjoy them the way you want to. They're your coins.

Do NOT use E-Z-Est or MS70 on copper! They work fine on silver.

I haven't used the other 2 you mentioned but have used Linder's Coin CLeaner (for all metals), Goo Gone (all metals), acetone (copper), and Coin Care (copper).

I sometimes put a few coins in an ultrasonic cleaner with a plastic basket and add Linder's or Goo Gone then run it for 5-10 minutes. Make sure the coins don't touch each other or any metal surface (only the plastic basket).

I've used toothpicks and Q-Tips to GENTLY remove fine pieces of debris. Never rub just tease the contaminant.

Always rinse the coins with water and pat dry when finished.

Practice on low value common date coins first and find out what works best.

I recommend you search for the forums for "cleaning". It's been discussed a lot here.

I never clean any of my coins but if you feel the need to experiment I would do it on a high mintage low grade coin.In the 70's Ive seen some real nice toned Morgans get ruined by dipping because the collectors all wanted shiny silver it was a crime.

FreezerBurn, thank you, THANK YOU. If I read one more time, "NEVER CLEAN A COIN", I am going to scream and poke my eyes out with a dull coin (LOL). Now if someone said, "IF you plan on selling it for a profit, never clean it", I can deal with that. But I collect because I enjoy looking at the coin, and I sure do not enjoy looking at a coin that I can't distinguish from a mud covered washer or a crude oil covered slug.
