With a couple of 1859 posts being topical lately, here is a web site that is probably the best at sorting through the issues with the last 9.

http://varieties.piczo.com/?cr=3&rfm=y

Wide 9 generally refers to a 9/8 where the actual 9 is wider than the normal narrow 9.

Spacing issues with the final 9 in the date would be better if they were named near and far, high and low etc to avoid confusion with the wide and narrow 9 reference.

This is a great series for 9/9 and 5/5 as well.

1859 is a nice date for variety collectors, with so many varieties available within that date. Seems like almost every die pair had something unique. A few though have really captured the attention of some collectors, such as a Triple 9 variety which recently traded on ebay for $301.00 US (in a grade of about VF20). In fact, almost all the Victorian series of coins from 1c to 50c are full of varieties of all kinds, that can challenge even the most active collectors for years.
