My latest addition to my Gulden type set, a 1792 Generaliteits Gulden: My type set is nearing completion. Willem I through III are left. And perhaps a Lodewijk Napoleon (will be VERY expensive) and a proof nickel Juliana gulden (1968-1980, as I already have a silver Juliana gulden). The latter type is the only business strike gulden that exists in both silver and nickel versions. Nice. It's interesting that the Napoleonic coins come at such a premium. The most detested rulers are often the scarcest. I'm always looking for French Charles X branch mint coins.

Another Gulden, this one from 1848, arrived by mail today! It is not as nice as the 1864. This one seems to have been cleaned. Therefore: AU Details.

Got my final Gulden by airmail today from a seller in The Netherlands, a Willem I Gulden from 1824! Shipping was very quick, less than a week. And with that, my Gulden Type Set is now complete. (I will skip the Lodewijk Napoleon gulden).

Well done NumisEd Sometimes it seems "just right" not to complete a "set". You never know, perhaps in the future you will come upon a "Lodewijk Napoleon" in the most surprising and unusual circumstances!? Actually thq, I checked up on "Lodewijk Napoleon", the King of Holland from 1806 to 1810. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_BonaparteAccording to this article he appeared to be a very popular "King" of the Dutch. He learned to speak Dutch, he insisted that his court and ministers renounce their French citizenship and only speak Dutch. He helped oversee relief efforts during some tragedies in Holland (explosion of a ship, flooding) which added to his popularity... His elder brother Napoleon did not like this indipendent behaviour at all... In the context of this I think a "Lodewijk Napoleon" coin would take "pride of place" amongst the other coins of your collection, should you be fortunate enough to obtain such a coin some time in future... That is true, but my main reason for not including the coin is a financial one. A decent example in AU condition can go for thousands of dollars.

Quote: Completed my Gulden Type Set Very nice, NumisEd! I lived in The Netherlands for almost 5 years, leaving near the end of 2002, and the Dutch gold and silver types have been of interest to me (though I'm currently not pursuing that interest). At one point I had a mostly-complete mint state ten gulden gold type set, just missing the Lodewikj Napolean, Willem II and the first of the Willem III types, but eventually decided I wasn't willing to spend $10k+ on each of those to finish it .

Hokiefan, you could do a Wilhelmina 10 Gulden gold short set. Only four coins I believe.

Quote: Hokiefan, you could do a Wilhelmina 10 Gulden gold short set. Only four coins I believe. NumisEd, at the time I sold my set, I had the 4 main Wilhemina types, 3 of the Willem III types, and the Willem I. Some people have the 1898 Wilhemina with two sub-types - with and without a dot after initial P of the designer's name - which would then make that a 5-coin set. Similarly, you could consider the final Willem III type as two sub-types - one had a small broad axe on the reverse, the other had a halberd (I did have both of those). Excepting the ones I mentioned in my last post, all the types are fairly inexpensive even in MS64-MS66 grades. Sometimes I regret a bit getting rid of them, but that's water under the bridge... If I get started again on Dutch coins, I'll probably focus on one or more of the silver series, however.

Was visiting family in The Netherlands the last two weeks and couldn't resist visiting a few coin shops. In the end, I splurged on a new case for my Gulden Type Set, an upgrade for my 1980 Double Portrait, and a 1840 one-year Willem I Gulden. I decided to permanently forgo the Lodewijk Napoleon Gulden and focus on a complete "Kingdom of the Netherlands" set. That gives me 12 coins total.

Nice additions, and I like the case, too. I would love to visit The Netherlands again, as my wife and I still have several Dutch friends around Den Haag we've remained in touch with over the years. Last time I visited there was probably close to 10 years ago, which is too long...
