First thing I would check is whether some other coins weigh correctly on the same balance.

If you confirm that the weight is 5.1 grams (vs. the 5.67 standard) - check the coin's thickness. If it is thinner than other quarters, but thicker than a dime, it might have been struck on a planchet that was punched out of stock that was rolled thinner than standard.

At 5.1 grams, it is too heavy to have been struck on stock meant for a dime, so you might have a "rolled thin" error.

As noted by tdziemia, however, it's most important to verify the accuracy of your measurement of the coin's weight and confirm that it's not that your scale is off and giving a misreading for the coin.

Thank you for the reply. If I was to put the coin in the center it weighs 5.0 I also weighed 3 different Washington quarters and they weigh 5.6 or 5.7. I also weighed other State Quarters and they also weigh 5.6 or 5.7. Can it be a nickel planchette or how can I find out for sure.

The quarter has the same thickness as other quarters but the sound it gives is different when I hit 2 quarters together.

Did you use digital calipers to measure thickness or are you just eyeballing it? And if the quarter is light it will probably make a different noise than a normal quarter.

I eyeballed the thickness of the quarter but I really need to get an accurate reading on that. I guess I need to get a digital caliper. So if it's thinner than a regular what does that mean? As for Kloccwork419. There is copper showing.

The copper showing tells us that it's a normal (perhaps a little underweight) clad quarter. You do not have an error coin, sorry. Keep searching!

Guess it would mean the coin stock sheet the blank was stamped from was a bit thin.
